COMPUTER PROGRAMMER

I work as a computer programmer and was recently laid off from my job due to the influx of newly-trained computer programmers in India that are being hired by U.S. companies; I was outsourced along with many of my co-workers to the new computer programmers from India. It took me a few weeks, but I found a new job as a computer programmer for a different company. The good thing about this company is that it offers complete medical coverage. I need to find an eye doctor that would perform Lasik in Colorado. I have hated wearing my eye glasses ever since the fifth grade, and the success rate of these new Lasik eye surgeries has risen to almost ninety nine percent. I figured that since my new job would be willing to cover any medical bills of mine, that it would be a good time to consider getting Lasik eye surgery and never having to wear eye glasses again. I do not think that I would be willing to fly somewhere or even travel out of the state of Colorado to get this eye surgery, so I will have to find an eye surgeon to do Lasik in Colorado.

FIXING THE PROBLEM

My husband decided to fix up the garage, with the help of our two teenaged sons.  They went about planning exactly what they wanted to do.  All three of them had his own idea of the way the garage should be arranged so it would work the best.  One son thought the best thing to do was have a garage sale, and that would get rid of the clutter quite nicely.  The other thought they should put up drywall, clean and paint the floor and get some cheap organizers to put all the clutter away in.  Since it is just the garage, there is no need to be really fancy about it; besides if they make this a project that was too involved, they could end up missing an important ballgame.  My husband kept saying, let’s think about it a little more.  We are bound to agree on something.  Weeks went by.  Summer was turning into Fall. They tried again, but fell back into the old arguments, and spent another week chewing it over.  My daughters decided to help them out.  The men were finished before the girls came over the next weekend.  Girl Power! my girls said, having a good laugh.

TIME BEFORE COMPUTERS

Contrary to what many people might believe, there was actually a time in recent history before computers.  And, in fact, there was a time where computers were around and not everyone was so utterly dependent on them for everything.  It’s hard to imagine that today in a world where even typewriters have become obsolete, but it was the way the world used to be.

The advent of the personal computer is probably the worst thing to have ever happened to research.  If you have children or are around them for any reasonable length of time, you’ve probably heard them complain about a certain teacher giving them a research paper to do.  Now they have to write out 5, 7, or even 10 pages, but the teacher also insisted that they use at least 3 sources other than the internet.  That means they have to go to the library and actually look things up in books.

Teachers insist upon this so that their students actually know how to look up something up other than typing in the subject into a web search engine and pulling up web pages.  Libraries are still around and they’re still a valuable resource.  What if something happened to your computer?  What would you do?

No one considers that the articles that people pull up on the internet got their information either from other articles on the internet or directly from books themselves.  In most cases, it’s best going to the most direct source of information.  Since the average person isn’t digging up fossils or exploring the ruins of ancient cities or opening up Egyptian pyramids, books are their most direct source.

These days, more and more books are being put onto the internet of course, but who ever says that people don’t still read is dead wrong.  No one can read page after page after page off a computer screen like they can off a book.  And people still read novels and other kinds of books for fun.  Whenever you ride the train or bus, you see people sticking their noses into books.  There are still bestseller lists for books in the major newspapers.  Major bookstore chains like Borders and Barnes and Noble are still open and doing good business.

Basically, people are still reading and they read more than anyone really seems to think.  In fact, when using the internet, you are actually reading too.  It’s just more difficult reading which is why the best writing for the internet is concise, to the point, and short, not to mention spaced out.

While computers might be valuable in preserving the contents of old books, they’ll never completely replace the function of books in our society.  The internet might be its own entity now that no one can fully control or regulate, but the articles you look up on it aren’t always correct.  And, in many cases, there’s no way you can check on whether its right or wrong.  A well-researched book will at least cite its sources at the end.

OUR MISADVENTURES

My friend, who moved to California with her husband, told me all about their misadventures while trying to move their furniture cross country in a u-haul themselves, instead of having someone do it for such an exorbitant fee.  Their troubles started when their truck started making a very funny noise, and they decided they had better stop someplace and get it looked at.  She says her brother saved the day, when he drove on his motorcycle to the next town and picked up a part for the mechanic.  The mechanic was impressed, but said her brother should find a personal injury attorney in California and put him on retainer.  It seems the town that had the part he needed to fix the truck with was over 200 miles away, and it would take at least six hours for the round trip.  Of course, my friend said, she and her husband knew better.  They had given up warning her brother that he drove that motorcycle absolutely too fast.  It seems during their trip, he would take side trips to sightsee or even take a nap, and they would take hours to catch up with him.  He came back with that part in a little over four hours.
